Abstract

Multiple tooth agenesis in the upper jaw of cleft patients confront the orthodontist with problems, because it is difficult to achieve a proper space closure especially in cases where clefts are extremely wide. In the following article a new method of treatment shall be introduced, which could solve the mentioned therapeutic problem. By means of segmental distraction of defined parts of the small segments in mesial direction, it is possible to close clefts without special transplants of larger amounts of bone. Teeth of the lower jaw can be transplanted into the developed bone, distal of the distraction. This would simultaneously correct the unequal amount of teeth and in addition achieve a space closure without using prosthetics.
