Summary

Two small retrospective cohort studies shed little light on whether intramedullary (IM) nailing or open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) with plate fixation is more effective in treating both-bone forearm fractures in children. Nonunion and delayed union rates varied between studies for each treatment. Overall complication rates for the IM nailing group ranged from 22% in one study to 43% in another, while in the ORIF group, the complication rate was 33% in both studies. Better studies with larger samples are needed to determine which treatment option is optimal.
