Die Bildung des Gases Ozon wurde im Jahre 1832 erstmals von dem Chemiker Schönbein
beobachtet und beschrieben. Es ist das stärkste Oxidationsmittel und besitzt bakterizide,
fungizide und antivirale Eigenschaften. Aufgrund seiner Wirkung wird Ozon bereits
seit Jahrzehnten industriell vor allem zur Behandlung von Mineralwasser und bei der
Abwasserreinigung eingesetzt. Auch im medizinischen Bereich findet Ozon für Desinfektionsmaßnahmen
und darüber hinaus für therapeutische Zwecke Verwendung. Dahingegen ist die Nutzung
dieses Gases in der Zahnmedizin über den experimentellen Charakter bisher kaum hinausgekommen.
Erst kürzlich konnte gezeigt werden, dass Ozon bei der Behandlung von initialen kariösen
Läsionen eine hohe Wirksamkeit besitzt. Der Einsatz bei der Parodontitistherapie und
im Rahmen der Wurzelkanalbehandlung erscheint ebenfalls sinnvoll. Wissenschaftliche
Untersuchungen dazu fehlen jedoch bislang.
Formation of the gas ozone was first observed and reported by the chemist Schönbein
in 1832. Ozone is the most powerful oxidizing agent and is effective against bacteria,
fungi and viruses. Due to the mentioned properties ozone has been industrially used
for purification of mineral water and sewage treatment for several decades. Additionally,
ozone is used in medicine as disinfectant and for therapeutic actions. However, in
dentistry application of this gas has been generally considered to be experimental
so far. Recently published studies have shown that ozone is highly efficacious during
treatment of initial carious lesions. Beyond this, the use of ozone in periodontics
as well as in endodontics appears to be promising. However, sound scientific studies
to this subject matter are needed.
