Abstract
Scapular kinematics were measured and analysed in 17 subjects with atraumatic shoulder instability and an asymptomatic control group. No significant differences in the scapular kinematics of humero-thoracic arm lifting in the frontal and sagital plane could be detected in both groups. However, the results showed that the subjects with atraumatic shoulder instability had significantly less upward and lateral scapulo-thoracic rotation than the control group.
This results support the thesis that shoulder instability can correspond with scapular dysfunction which can contribute to the development of a decentralised glenohumeral position. In cases of shoulder instability the examination of scapular kinematics should be part of the assessment.
