Abstract
Congenital heart disease (CHD) occurs in approximately 0.8 % of live newborns. Today, more than 80 % of these patients reach adulthood, creating a growing population of grown-ups with congenital heart disease (GUCH). According to recent data, the number of adults with surgically treated CHD living in Germany is about 180 000. These patients require lifelong follow-ups, ideally provided by pediatric heart specialists and cardiologists together. Due to distinct advantages and rapid technological progress over the last three decades, CMR has evolved as first-line diagnostic tool in management of GUCH patients. In addition to the generation of high-resolution images in any orientation, CMR also is capable of retrieving functional information, e. g. quantification of ventricular function and volume, as well as valve (mal-)function, shunts, extracardiac connections etc. At this stage, CMR has emerged as an accurate imaging technique with widespread clinical implications. It can be expected that recent progress and development will even raise the clinical and diagnostic impact of CMR.
