Dear Collegue,
Technology is an ally more and more present at the diagnosis and in the therapy of
otorhinolaryngological area. The transoral robotic surgery is a great example of this
kind of instrument that comes in the sense of minimizes the caused damage by a surgical
procedure, with the maximum efficiency that we can get. As example, a good indication
for the use of robotic is the surgery for resection of a tumor in the base of the
tongue, when without it, we are forced to, many time, perform the mandibulotomy and
opening the mouth floor, so that we can have an adequate vision of the lesion. However,
as in every technology, because of its high cost, is only present at the private hospital
in Brazil, where patients of the Single Health System (SHS) can't have access. Certainly
that, with a larger disclosure in the results of this kind of technology, associated
to a epidemiological studies of the possible lesions that can be involved in this
process of the treatment, will make that, the health authorities in our country weight
in the financial account, the cost benefit of this kind of device for the use in large
scale in the SHS level, decreasing the surgical aggressiveness for the patient (with
improvement of quality of life, as far that we can preserve the organ), decreasing
the time of hospitalization and, obviously, decreasing the costs that the treatment
for patients with malignant tumors in the base of the tongue cause to the national
public funds.
Besides, tumors located in the base of the tongue are important causes of dysphagia
and, many times, of a definitive commitment in the swallowing, having the robotic
surgery a conservative role in this kind of complaint of the patient, with advantages
previously described regarding the open surgery.
The Magazine International Archives of Otorhinolaryngology, in the year 2011, will
award works of systematic review (Meta-analysis), searching to give emphasis to the
models of articles that form the base and concepts in the universal knowledge.
The competing works must, mandatorily, be published in the fascicles 1 to 3 of volume
15, from the year 2011. The rules to run for the prizes are in this magazine.
We hope to see you all in future publications.
