Prof. Cláudio Martins Real: Brazilian Pioneer of Veterinary Homeopathy and Population-Based Homeopathy

Pioneer in Brazilian veterinary homeopathy, Prof. Cláudio Martins Real leaves a legacy of profound scientific and, above all, human wisdom to the Brazilian people. As the visionary behind the incorporation of homeopathy into everyday clinical veterinary practice, he advanced the concept of population-level homeopathy in Brazil. His scientific research contributions have become foundational for managing diseases and disorders in animals of various species. Born in Capão do Leão, a district of Pelotas, on February 11, 1926, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, he earned his degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1948. He was awarded the Diploma de Láurea, the highest academic distinction granted to students of exceptional merit. Thanks to his remarkable scientific and clinical–epidemiological skills, he became the youngest professor to hold the position of full professor of Pathology and Internal Medicine of Domestic Animals at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).
At the UFRGS, he served as an assistant and full professor in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, teaching subjects such as Reproductive Pathology and Medicine I and II, Internal Medicine I and II and Large Animal Medicine between 1949 and 1981. From 1981 to 1993, he continued his teaching career at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) until his retirement. He was honored 11 times as distinguished professor by graduating classes at the UFMS, three times as guest of honor and 10 times as commencement speaker (Paraninfo) at the UFRGS. He was a member of several scientific societies, including the Homeopathic League of Rio Grande do Sul, the Veterinary Society of Rio Grande do Sul, the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science, the Centre Homeopathique de France, the São Paulo Association of Homeopathy, the Brazilian Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Physicians, and the International Association for Veterinary Homeopathy (IAVH). He supervised research on subjects such as professional ethics, veterinary homeopathy, clinical medicine, reproductive management, fertility in beef and dairy cattle, crossbreeding, interrupted weaning, cow mortality in the Midwest, metabolic and deficiency diseases, mineral supplementation in cattle, calcium–phosphorus balance and its zootechnical outcomes, and population-level homeopathy. He authored original articles on topics such as Clinical Medicine, Reproduction, Animal Management and Homeopathic Therapeutics, including two papers published in L'homeopathie Française (Paris, 1954 and 1955). He was the first in the world to diagnose Myasthenia gravis in a dog and proposed a unique and innovative homeopathic treatment for the condition.
Throughout his life, he received several important honors, including the title of Emeritus Professor from UFRGS, the rank of Commander from the Brazilian Association of Veterinary Medicine, the Paulo Dacorso Filho Award from the Conselho Federal de Medicina Veterinária, and awards from the Brazilian Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Medicine.
In 1985, he founded a family business, initially a veterinary product store in Ribas do Rio Pardo, Mato Grosso do Sul, which became a supplement manufacturing facility in 1989 (Fábrica de Sal Mineralizado Real). Since then, the company, now Grupo Real H, headquartered in Campo Grande, MS, has focused on developing animal health formulations, expanding throughout Brazil and Latin America. His contributions to homeopathy were especially significant in pioneering the concept of population-level homeopathy in Brazil since 1991.
Population-based homeopathy is characterized by the mass administration of homeopathic substances to cattle herds, aiming to promote protective effects, health balance and improved zootechnical performance and productivity. The method is based on a strategic application that considers the particularities of each herd, environment and region to enhance productivity. This approach allows for large-scale administration, focusing on organic balance for prevention and support, without leaving harmful residues in animal products. Prof. Cláudio Real's innovation was to associate classical homeopathy with epidemiological principles and a simplified delivery strategy using mineral supplements. This pioneering contribution enabled the prevention and mitigation of diseases, improved productivity and zootechnical indicators and led to a strategic reduction in the use of antibiotics and antiparasitics in herds.
Today, Brazilian veterinary homeopathy is on the rise, recognized for its benefits, safety, and its contributions to animal welfare and quality of life. The Brazilian veterinary community mourns the loss of an exemplary mentor, an outstanding researcher, and a true pioneer in homeopathy. We proudly continue to spread his ideas through rigorous scientific discussions and high-quality experimental work.
Prof. Dr. Cláudio Martins Real will always be remembered for his academic contributions, scientific achievements, dedication to Brazilian veterinary homeopathy and animal welfare—and above all, for being an exceptional human being.
A giant in the “art of healing”.
