Inpatient rehabilitation designed for geriatric patients following hip fracture: a critique and the results of a recent metaanalysis

Summary

This recent metaanalysis included an evaluation of nine randomized controlled trials that studied the rehabilitation of geriatric patients who had suffered a hip fracture. Using pooling of the aggregate data from each study, functional improvements were significantly better for those patients who received a multidisciplinary inpatient rehabilitation program compared with those who received usual care, both at discharge and at longer term follow-up. There was less risk of nursing home admission and also of mortality in the rehabilitated patients compared with the usual care patients.
