Significance

Epoxidation of alkenes remains an area of intense interest in spite of the many advances seen in past decades. A key is to find simpler conditions (such as H2O2 rather than organic peroxides) and broader substrate scope. In this report, novel proline-derived C 1-symmetric salan ligands were prepared and successfully applied to the enantioselective titanium-catalyzed epoxidation of styrenes.
