Background

Endoscopists base diagnoses on several important findings, such as deviations from the normal mucosal color tone, changes in vascular networks, mucosal unevenness, fold deformity, and the presence or absence of ulcers. Changes in color tone are often the most important factor in the identification of tumors or the evaluation of the severity and nature of inflammation. The color tone seen during endoscopic examination has been studied extensively in Japan, and new instruments related to this have been developed [1] [2] [3]. A new series of videoscopes incorporate the feature of color emphasis image processing, which permits visualization of mucosal blood flow and estimation of changes in flow [4].
