Minimale Spannungen oder größere Krisen in der therapeutischen Beziehung ereignen sich häufig. Ein gelungener Umgang mit ihnen ist ein zentraler Wirkmechanismus von Psychotherapie und eine Voraussetzung für den Therapieerfolg. Therapeuten fällt es jedoch häufig schwer, eine Spannung ausreichend wahrzunehmen und konstruktiv zu besprechen. Oft setzen sie das Verstricktsein in ein schwieriges Beziehungsmuster fälschlicherweise gleich mit therapeutischer Inkompetenz.
