Introduction

Biomedical and health informatics (BMHI) plays a crucial role in the era of data-driven health care by integrating health data, assuring its quality, and providing reliable data analyses. BMHI enables clinical decision-making to improve patient outcomes, health care delivery, and medical research. BMHI as a field has more than 50 years of experience in educating biomedical and health informaticians, and to date numerous programs and courses exist worldwide.[1] [2] [3] There are many opportunities and a strong need for BMHI professionals with different profiles,[4] [5] and in this Focus Theme we aimed to highlight some current work of students at master's level from different BMHI programs.

With the goal to provide a platform for emerging scholars to showcase their research, Methods of Information in Medicine invited master's students, nominated by their universities, to submit their work. The call addressed original research on all topics of BMHI, presenting new methods or the application of existing methods in a new or innovative way with the aim of improving health. The editors decided to implement this student paper award as a yearly call with a deadline in September each year. Judging for the award was done by an anonymous panel made up of Editorial Board members and referees. Three papers from the 2024 competition were selected as first, second, and third prize. The award winners are presented at the end of this editorial. This year's call with a submission deadline of September 15, 2025, will be announced soon.
