Optimizing Carotid Body Tumor Surgery: Multidisciplinary Insights
Autoren
We read with great interest the recent article by Işık et al, Surgical and Histopathological Results in Carotid Body Tumors.[1]
The authors presented important clinical and histopathological insights into the surgical management of carotid body tumors and emphasized both the technical challenges and the favorable surgical outcomes when handled in experienced centers.
Their conclusion that surgical resection remains the cornerstone of management, with acceptable morbidity when conducted within a multidisciplinary framework, is highly valuable.
However, we would like to highlight an overlooked aspect when placing their findings in the broader context of paraganglioma surgery.
In our earlier study, Arterial and Venous Paragangliomas: The Value of a Preoperative Pacemaker and a Multidisciplinary Approach,[2] we reported on the significance of preoperative preparation—particularly the use of pacemakers in select cases—along with the necessity of multidisciplinary team involvement to optimize safety and outcomes.
Our results demonstrated that anticipating cardiovascular complications and planning accordingly could reduce perioperative risks, which parallels the current emphasis by Işık et al on the need for careful surgical planning and teamwork.
While Işık et al focus primarily on surgical and histopathological outcomes, integration of cardiological measures and vascular considerations, as described in our series, provides an added dimension to achieving favorable results in carotid body and related paragangliomas.
We believe future reports on carotid body tumor management would benefit from incorporating both surgical experience and the adjunctive perioperative strategies that we and others have advocated.
