Ovulation Recovery after Hormonal Contraception

Summary

In an attempt to study the ovulation recovery after hormonal contraception, 20 patients who were on B. C. P. (birth control pills) during 12-36 months, were switched to I. U. D. contraception, and the ovarian changes occurred were assessed by laparoscopy and laparoscopic ovarian biopsy. Fresh corpus luteum was found in 12 cases (60%), some follicular activity in 4 cases (20%) and no signs of activity in 4 cases (20%). Our results suggest that neither the length of hormonal contraception nor the patient's age have any particular influence upon the return of ovulation.

Zusammenfassung

Bei 20 Patienten, die für 12–36 Monate orale Kontrazeptiva eingenommen hatten, wurden Veränderungen des Ovars nach Umsetzen auf ein Intrauterinpessar laparoskopisch und bioptisch untersucht, um einen Eindruck von der Regenerationsfähigkeit der Ovulation zu erhalten. Ein frisches Corpus luteum fand sich in 12 Fällen (60%), follikuläre Aktivität in 4 Fällen (20%) und keine Aktivitätshinweise in 4 Fällen (20%). Die Ergebnisse machen es wahrscheinlich, daß weder die Länge der hormonellen Kontrazeption noch das Alter der Patientin einen Einfluß auf die Wiederaufnahme der Ovulation haben.
