Death Following Fiberoptic Gastroscopy Caused by Pheochromocytoma

Summary

A 45-year-old woman was admitted to hospital for investigation of weight loss, sciatica and excess sweating. On examination, she was found to have a tachycardia and the stigmata of von Recklinghausen's disease. Her investigations included a barium meal and gastroscopy. Following the gastroscopy, she developed ventricular tachycardia and died. An autopsy revealed a pheochromocytoma of the left adrenal gland.

Zusammenfassung

Eine 45jährige Frau wurde zur Abklärung ihres Gewichtsverlustes, einer Ischialgie und exzessiver Schweißausbrüche ins Krankenhaus aufgenommen. Die klinische Untersuchung zeigte eine Tachykardie und Zeichen eines Morbus Recklinghausen. Als weitere Untersuchungen wurden u. a. ein Bariumbreischluck und eine Gastroskopie durchgeführt. Im Anschluß an die Gastroskopie entwickelte die Patientin eine Tachykardie und verstarb. Bei der Autopsie wurde ein Phäochromozytom der linken Nebenniere festgestellt.
