Summary
Long-term immunosuppressive treatment of visceral lupus erythematodes was given to 28 patients (19 men, nine women). The patients were classified into three groups according to the severity and number of clinical signs. The severity of the disease to some extent correlated with the immunofluorescent titre and the number of LE cells. In five patients treated only with prednisone there was merely transient improvement without titre fall: one patient died. The other 23 patients were given prednisone and cytostatic drugs, usually 6-mercaptopurine or azathioprine, 18 of them for an average of 3œ (range 1–5Œ years. In this latter group of 18 patients eight had complete remission and ten prolonged partial remissions.
