Pharmaceutical economy of the oral anticoagulants – How cost–effective are the new preparations?Publication History

Concerning present available study data the rates of venous thromboembolism is lower with the new oral anticoagulants compared to low molecular weight heparins (LMWH). Under this condition these new substances are cost effective. The subsequent costs of a thrombosis are the cost drivers in the course of treatment of the thrombosis prophylaxis. Further advantages of these substances compared with LMWHs are the oral administration, no needle–stick injuries and haematoma, no monitoring and an improved compliance with patient to self–administer the s.c. medication. Pharmacoeconomic models permit the calculation of these coherence with short and long–term data. A positive result of these evaluations is in many countries a condition for reimbursement.
Key words
Pharmacoeconomics - anticoagulants - low molecular weight heparins - oral administration - thrombosis - cost–effective
