GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE – A COMMON COMPLICATION OF THE ADULT PATIENT WITH ESOPHAGEAL PLASTY WITH GASTRIC TUBE AFTER POSTCAUSTIC STENOSIS
Publication History
Publication Date:
27 March 2018 (online)
Aims: Introduction:
Gastroesophageal reflux disease represents one of the most common complications in case of patients with esophageal plasty using stomach or colon, performed after esophageal stenosis caused by ingestion of caustics in childhood.
Methods: Material and method:
A prospective study was conducted at the Institute of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Iasi, Romania, between January 2015 and June 2017. It included 11 adult patients (55% females, 45% male, average age: 21 ± 5.80 years old) with a history of postcaustic esophageal stenosis and esophageal plasty with colonic or gastric tube under 18 years old. The patients were clincally and endoscopic evaluated and the diagnostic of gastroesophageal reflux disease was based on a GERD-Q score higher than 8.
Results: Results:
Of the 11 patients, 6 had plasty with gastric tube (group A) and 5 with colonic tube (group B). Most of the patients in group A were females, but males were more prevalent in group B. All patients came from rural areas with the exception of one individual with gastric tube. The average age was 24 years in group A and 20.2 years in group B. The diagnostic of gastroesophageal reflux disease was established in 5 patients (45%), all having esophageal plasty with gastric tube. In addition to the typical symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease the 5 patients had also nocturnal chronic cough. None of the patients declared the chronic consumption of alcohol or tobacco.
Conclusions: Conclusions:
Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a common complication of the adult patient who had an esophageal plasty with gastric tube for postcaustic stenosis after accidentally ingestion of caustic soda in childhood.
