SINGLE BALLOON ENTEROSCOPY: CROATIAN SINGLE CENTER EXPERIENCE ON 352 PROCEDURES
Publication History
Publication Date:
27 March 2018 (online)
Aims:
To evaluate the clinical utility and diagnostic impact of single balloon enteroscopy (SBE) in a cohort of patients at a single tertiary center.
Methods:
A total of 352 patients with suspected small bowel diseases who underwent SBE via the oral and/or anal routes from October 2012 to October 2017 were retrospectively analyzed.
Results:
Antegrade and retrograde approaches were used in 67% (235/352) and 33% (117/352) of patients, respectively. Patients were referred mainly for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) (40%) and suspected Crohn's disease (30%). The average insertion lenght using antegrade approach was 162 cm (range 100 – 300 cm) beyond the ligament of Treitz and by retrograde approach was 100 cm (range 40 – 200 cm) proximal to the ileocecal valve. Average procedure time for antegrade approach was 52 minutes (range 20 – 60) and for retrograde approach was 65 minutes (40 – 90). Overall diagnostic yield was 57% (200/352); 40% (140/352) were therapeutic cases. There were no significant complications.
Conclusions:
SBE is a safe and effective method for deep enteroscopy as it has high diagnostic yield with potential for therapeutic interventions.
