Aims:

Brunner's gland hamartoma or adenoma is a benign proliferative disorder of the duodenum. A large tumor (over 1 cm in diameter) is rare and difficult for endoscopic diagnosis. In this study, the feasibility of EUS on diagnosis of this tumor was investigated.

Methods:

The patients with large Brunner's gland hamartoma (more than 1 cm) were enrolled, and their medical records including EUS features and pathologic findings were reviewed.

Results:

The total 8 tumors were analyzed, and the median age was 52.6 years. The median diameter was 26.3 mm (range: 10 mm-36 mm). EUS finding was classified into three categories: homogenous hypoechoic cystic appearance (4 tumors), homogenous isoechoic well defined appearance (3 tumors), and heterogenous mixed (1 tumor). The typical feature of multiple clustered cysts and solid portion were found commonly in all 8 tumors (Figure 1). These findings were consistent with pathologic findings.

Conclusions:

A typical appearance of multiple clustered cysts and solid in EUS will help diagnosis of a large Brunner's gland hamartoma.
