Dr. Tsuyoshi Konishi is the Head Attending of the Colorectal Division in the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery at the Cancer Institute Hospital of the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research in Tokyo, Japan. He was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, and has spent much of his life in that city. He graduated from the University of Tokyo and obtained his MD in 1997, followed by completing a 4-year PhD program in Surgical Oncology in 2006. He also completed his Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery at the Cancer Institute Hospital of the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research. Following several years in practice, he was promoted to an attending physician in 2010, and ultimately spent 1-year performing a research fellowship as a visiting investigator at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in the Colorectal Division of Surgical Oncology in 2015–2016, mentored by Drs. Julio Garcia-Aguilar and Martin Weiser. Eventually he was promoted to his current post as Head Attending in 2017. Along the way, he has obtained multiple board certifications in Japan, including surgery, colorectal surgery, endoscopic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, and infection control.

Dr. Konishi is a very busy clinical surgeon and performs award-winning, incredibly high-end research. His practice and research interest have focused on combining the Western multidisciplinary approach with the Asian (i.e., Japanese) surgical approach of meticulous lymph node dissection. Under his leadership, his team has had a high adoption of minimally invasive approaches, achieving excellent short-term and oncologic outcomes in locally advanced colorectal cancer to include lateral lymph node dissections, pelvic exenterations, and multivisceral resections. As a prolific academic surgeon and active researcher, he has given more than 40 invited lectures at international conferences all over the world. He also has been awarded 18 grants investigating topics ranging from colorectal cancer to surgical site infection. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications and 4 book chapters covering the breadth of colorectal surgery. His particular interest in colorectal cancer has led to leading large international collaborative studies, award-winning projects, and performing live educational surgical symposia.

Konishi is married to his wife, Nanae, and they have two wonderful children (Rena and Taiki). When not at work, they enjoy tennis, exploring restaurants in Tokyo, wine-tasting, and traveling.

On behalf of the readers and staff of Clinics of Colon and Rectal Surgery, I sincerely thank Dr. Konishi for serving as a Guest Editor and for providing us with an incredible insight volume on “East vs. West” in Colorectal Surgery.
