Die Pathophysiologie der Schizophrenie ist nach wie vor unklar und Gegenstand umfangreicher Forschung. Derzeitig favorisierte Modelle betonen die komplexe Interaktion zwischen Veranlagungsfaktoren (genetisch, epigenetisch) sowie Umweltfaktoren (psychologische sowie biologische Stressoren, Traumata, nutritive, immunologische Einflüsse u. a.) die zu einer Reihe von Veränderungen in der Gehirnstruktur, der Gehirnchemie und der Physiologie des Gehirns führen [1], [2], [7].
