On behalf of ESGE, I wish you all a Happy New Year 2018. With news working groups and lots of new projects, 2017 has been a busy year. With our first “ESGE Days”congress just around the corner, 2018 promises to be busier and more exciting!

In recent years, ESGE published numerous guidelines covering most areas of endoscopy. We realize that the implementation of these important tools are crucial for daily practice and in 2018 the Quality Improvement Committee (QIC) will focus on how to best disseminate this knowledge amongst colleagues in Europe and beyond.

ESGE, as a society has been growing steadily and counts now nearly 2000 individual members with 50 actively cooperating member societies.

In 2017 several new initiatives were launched, namely for membership, curricula and online seminar development, for patient relations and for our young fellows. The ESGE Young Endoscopist (EYE) working group will be involved in all ESGE activities, giving insight into the needs and interests of the upcoming generation. A short description of these working groups is included in this newsletter.

ESGE will hold its first annual meeting, ESGE Days 2018, in Budapest, Hungary April 19–21 and preparations are in full swing. We were delighted to receive more than 750 abstracts from 55 countries which were evaluated by an excellent panel of experts. (www.esgedays.org). We look forward to an exciting year ahead and very much hope to greet you all in Budapest!
