Introduction In otorhinolaryngology visual findings are the central examination element and are increasingly stored digitally. The image and video access for research and teaching is often complicated or limited in length and therefore the use of one’s own images are often discarded, and other sources or software are used, of which some are fee-based.

Material and Methods We established capture cards for different applications to convert the video output signal for external monitors from the diagnostic equipment to use in live-streaming or recording of the newly generated video input signal after patient consent.

Results Beginning with live streaming in the ENT Department of UMG we now record specific clinical exams by capture cards on any device for later processing. The capture card enabled us to gain an uncomplicated access via plug and play to any video output of any device. We were thus able to use the desired image material in live streaming whilst recording in unrestricted length and process it for later use in presentations or on our e-learning platform.

Discussion A capture card is a cheap investment, which gave us the opportunity to an unlimited use of images and videos with little effort. The processing requires technical skills but can be self-taught. A ‘technical support’ isn’t required but it was to our advantage if one person was able to concentrate on the clinical exam and another person ensured the undisturbed live-streaming and recording which may increase the required human resources.
