Dr. Sergey Khaitov is an Associate Professor of Surgery and the Surgical Co-Director of the Susan & Leonard Feinstein Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Clinical Center at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, NY. He was born and raised in Ukraine and attended Donetsk State Medical University, graduating with honors in 1995. He moved to Israel that year to undertake his internship at Hadassah University Hospital and his General Surgery residency at Mount Scopus in Jerusalem. He then came to the United States in 2002 and completed another General Surgery residency, and subsequently a Colorectal Fellowship, at Mount Sinai, where he has practiced ever since.

Sergey's main interest in medicine is in caring for patients with IBD. He enjoys this unique niche of colorectal surgery and every aspect of it—both Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis—the minor and major procedures, and most importantly the long-term connection with so many of his patients. Despite being a busy clinical surgeon, he is a key opinion leader and speaker around the nation on IBD, and Chair of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons IBD Committee. He also is an active researcher, and currently works with stem cells and their role in the management of Crohn's patients with perianal fistulas.

He and his wife, Alla, have two adult children—Yulia and Daniel. They all enjoy suburban life in New Jersey. Outside of medicine, he is a fishing fanatic, especially kayak and boat fishing—and takes every opportunity to do so. He also enjoys playing piano, taking vocal lessons, playing ice hockey, and is a black belt in judo.

On behalf of the readers and staff of Clinics in Colon and Rectal Surgery, I want to sincerely thank Dr. Khaitov for serving as a Guest Editor and for providing us with an incredible issue on better understanding the difficult decisions in the surgical management of patients with Crohn's disease.
