Perspective of enteroscopy in Spain
Authors
Aims Our aim is to establish a general overview of the current state of enteroscopy in Spain
Methods To achieve this, we have created a survey with Google Forms which has been answered by the spanish hospitals where enteroscopy is currently performed
Results The centers that perform the most enteroscopies are third-level hospitals (72.4%) which are public (9.7%) and also perform enteroscopies from other hospitals (82.8%). Most have performed fewer than 25 enteroscopies per year (41.4%), with usually two endoscopists assigned to this technique (69%), and most scheduling one enteroscopy per day (62.1%). In half of the surveyed hospitals, all capsule readers are dedicated to enteroscopy; those that do not, attribute it mainly to a lack of cases and training. The most commonly used enteroscope in Spain nowadays is the single-balloon type (72.4%). Half of the surveyed hospitals have used the Power Spiral, and agree with this technique providing greater advancement and speed. However, no center has abandoned enteroscopy after its withdrawal. In most centers, sedation is performed by the anesthesia service (82.8%), in the left lateral decubitus position (96.6%), and without prior preparation (9.7%), with the procedure typically being done outpatient (69%). The main indication is the treatment of angiodysplasias (82.8%). In 31% of the centers, there is no availability for urgent enteroscopy within 72 hours, attributing it to the need of suspending an operating room's schedule. In 58.6% of the hospitals, residents are trained in capsule reading, and in 31%, they are trained in enteroscopy.
Conclusions In conclusion, we have established a general overview of enteroscopy in Spain. It is remarkable the low number of hospitals which perform enteroscopy. This requires further investigation.
