Simple variation of oxidizing agent (iron nitrate or ferricinuim tetrafluoroborate in acetonitrile) results in selective conversion of a highly substituted η4-cyclopentadiene cobalt complex to either the uncomplexed cyclopentadiene ligand or to the corresponding cationic η5-cyclopentadienyl cobalt complex.
