2-(Phenylethynyl)pyridines substituted in the 3-position with a carbonyl or masked carbonyl group were converted to various bicyclic pyridine derivatives (quinoline, furo[3,4-b]pyridine, and pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyridine derivatives) by intramolecular cyclization under basic conditions.
