3-Formyl-3-cephems 3 were prepared by direct oxidation of 3-iodomethyl-3-cephems 2 in N,N-dimethyl-formamide in the presence of rhodium(III) chloride trihydrate/aluminum, vanadyl acetylacetonate, or vanadyl sulfate under an oxygen or an air atmosphere.
