A convenient and general method for the synthesis of nitrogen heterocyclic systems via the intramolecular trapping of ketenes has been developed. Thermolysis of the corresponding amino ethyl alkynyl ether derivatives at 150°C for 3 hours produced the desired lactams (6-15 membered) in good to excellent yields.
