The synthesis of a series of chiral and prochiral tris(diphenylphosphines) starting from (R,R)-tartaric acid or erythritol, respectively, is described. The new compounds based on a rigid 1,3-dioxolane ring may be useful as tridentate ligands for the complexation of several metals in different bonding modes.
