The synthesis of tetrahydro- and 2,3-dihydro-3-methylene-4H-thiopyran-4-one is described. The tin hydride mediated addition of alkyl and aryl halides to these compounds is presented as a general method to obtain the corresponding 3-substituted 4H-thiopyran-4-ones.
