Based on a new photochemical access to benzocyclobutenes, tricyclic nitrogen containing heterocycles were synthesized. The thermolytic transformation of the benzocyclobutene moiety into ortho quinodimethane intermediates as diene in an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction constitutes a second key step of the synthesis.
