A synthesis of planar chiral cationic η 3-allyl molybdenum complexes from chiral allylic benzoates benefits from the high reactivity and stereoselectivity of the inital oxidative addition step using cis-Mo(CO)4(Py)2. X-ray crystallographic evidence for the stereochemistry and mechanism of the oxidative addition step is presented.
