Introduction

In recent years gastrointestinal endoscopy has emerged as a powerful clinical and research tool. The number of randomized controlled clinical trials whose selection criteria or outcome end points are based on endoscopic findings is steadily rising. In addition, novel endoscopic techniques are being developed and rapidly incorporated into routine clinical practice. All this implies research in healthy individuals and in patients. Gastrointestinal endoscopy-based research (GEBR) is by no means exempt from the ethical rules of medical research [1]. This article summarizes the recommendations of the workshop on the ethics of GEBR presented at the First European Symposium on Ethics in Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy.
