Abstract
Over the last years, the treatment of diaphyseal fractures in children and adolescents has evolved towards an approach that permits shorter immobilization and hospitalization and a rapid re-insertion in social life. Outcomes of diaphyseal fractures treated non-operatively were compared with the percutaneous flexible fixation method in a retrospective study. 105 diaphyseal fractures (tibial and femoral) were treated in our clinic between 1995 and 2004 (46 non-operatively and 59 by percutaneous elastic nailing). Conservative treatment led to a greater number of complications, such as limb length discrepancy and malalignment. Stabilization of the fracture by use of percutaneous elastic nailing allowed consolidation and rapid mobilization with few complications.
