Acute Pancreatitis Following Gastrointestinal Endoscopy without Ampullary Cannulation

Summary

The case of a 58-year-old woman who developed acute pancreatitis following routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is reported. Ampullary cannulation was not performed. At surgery, a focus of acute necrotizing pancreatitis was disclosed in the pancreatic area drained by the duct of Santorin. Overdistention of the duodenum, and reflux of air and/or duodenal juice into the pancreatic duct might have been etiological factors in this case of acute pancreatitis.
