Abstract

Aromatherapy is the treatment of symptoms and diseases with essential oils. Essential oils are supposed to influence the mind via the bulbus olfactorius and the limbic system. From the limbic system neuronal impulses reach various brain regions, which trigger physiological and therapeutic effects. Very often, massage therapy and aromatherapy are combined together.

Meanwhile various clinical trials are existing, which address commonly used essential oils such as lavender oil, lemon oil, sweet orange oil, chamomile oil, and melissa oil. These studies show that aromatherapy can be used as an effective and well-tolerated therapeutic option for common clinical symptoms and diseases.
