Die diabetische Neuropathie ist eine wichtige Folgeerkrankung einer anhaltend hyperglykämen Stoffwechsellage. Sie ist maßgeblich an der überhöhten Morbidität und Mortalität von Diabetikern beteiligt, ihre frühzeitige Diagnostik verbessert die Prognose und beugt zudem der Entwicklung eines diabetischen Fußsyndroms vor. Diabetische Gastroparese, muskuloskeletale Beschwerden sowie die erektile Dysfunktion stellen oft verkannte oder vernachlässigte Komplikationen des Diabetes dar.

Diabetic neuropathy is an important sequel to diabetes mellitus. A persistently hyper-glycaemic metabolic situation is the decisive risk factor and contributes significantly to the greatly enhanced morbidity and mortality of diabetics. If the diagnosis is made at an early stage, prognosis is improved and also helps to prevent the development of a diabetic gangrene. Diabetic paralysis of the stomach, musculoskeletal complaints and erectile dysfunction are frequently misrecognised or neglected diabetic complications.
