Abstract

Confronted with agenesis in the lower jaw, practitioner and patient must decide between space closure, (implant-)prosthetic restoration or keeping the deciduous tooth. There are advantages and disadvantages for each type of treatment which have been weighed against each other in orthodontic literature for decades. If the decision is in favor of space closure, it is possible to accomplish this by early hemisection of the 2nd primary molar and thus reducing the duration of subsequent multibracket treatment. The article describes the method involving hemisection and illustrates important aspects by a clinical example.
