Abstract

On October 31, 2020, it was a century ago that Frederick Banting wrote down at night his idea to produce insulin after the ligation pancreatic duct in dogs and the following atrophy of the exocrine tissue. But this idea was by no means new, and this method of insulin production was totally unsuitable for obtaining enough insulin to treat patients. Before him, Scott in Chicago, Zülzer and Reuter in Berlin and Paulescu in Bucharest had already developed methods for obtaining insulin from the pancreas of slaughtered animals and published the effects of their extracts. Not the unnecessary dog experiments of Banting and Best in the summer of 1921 but the work of the biochemist Collip made it possible to obtain insulin from the pancreas of slaughtered animals in a quantity and quality within a few weeks, which led to the successful treatment of people with diabetes in January 1922. But, as on previous anniversaries, the posthumous glorification of the research couple Banting and Best will once again outshine the memory of other important participants in the discovery of insulin at the centennial celebrations of the introduction of insulin therapy.
