Abstract

The current ICD-10 criteria for alcohol and substance-related dependence and harmful use have been in effect since 1991. The aims of this review are to explain the changes and extensions of the diagnoses of substance-related disorders in ICD-11 (International Classification of Diseases Version 11) using the example of alcohol use disorders: S similarities and differences to DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5) are presented. DSM is mainly used in the USA. In addition, a critical re-appraisal of the transfer of ICD-10 to -11 diagnoses and limitations and criticism of the conception of ICD-11 and regarding usability in practice are included.
