Judith A. Kwakman et al. Persistent contamination of a duodenoscope working channel
in a non-clinical simulated ERCP setting
Three duodenoscopes were contaminated repeatedly with a broth containing four different
microorganisms at a supraphysiological concentration of the average duodenal flora
in this in vitro non-clinical ERCP simulation study. After 60 cycles, it was found
that one duodenoscope had persistent contamination with one of the four organisms
(Pseudomonas aeruginosa). This finding could be suggestive of biofilm formation, although
that was not visualized by microscopic assessment.
