This video by Djinbachian et al. presents a significant advance in the field of gastroenterology and colorectal surgery. The integration of comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for detecting polyp characteristics is a promising development, particularly considering the therapeutic implications of using such technology in vivo before resection.

The use of a novel virtual scale endoscope (VSE) during colonoscopy, followed by 3D scanning post-resection, not only enhances the accuracy of polyp measurement but also opens new avenues for preoperative planning. By obtaining precise data on polyp morphology, size, and volume in vivo before removal, clinicians can make informed decisions about the most appropriate resection approach and technique, potentially increasing the success rate of interventions.

Moreover, the detailed 3D models generated from these scans can serve as invaluable resources for AI development, providing high quality ground truth data that can be used to train models to automatically recognize critical polyp characteristics. This could lead to more accurate and efficient diagnostic processes, further contributing to personalized and optimized patient care.
