Jeska A. Fritzsche et al. Biliary drainage prior to pancreatoduodenectomy with endoscopic ultrasound-guided choledochoduodenostomy versus conventional ERCP: propensity score-matched study and surgeon survey

The authors report on 937 consecutive patients who underwent preoperative biliary drainage (42 endoscopic ultrasound-guided choledochoduodenostomy [EUS-CDS] and 895 ERCP) before pancreatoduodenectomy. Eight (19 %) major postoperative complications were reported in the EUS-CDS group vs. 292 (33 %) in the ERCP group, whereas no differences in overall complications, bile leaks, and fistulas were seen. A survey on the difficulty of the surgical procedure in 29 patients who underwent preoprative EUS-CDS showed that surgery was not or only slightly hampered in the majority of the cases (n=21, 76%).
