Abstract
Hand cycling as a sport is geared towards those who are temporarily or wholly dependent on the use of a wheelchair and have the good possibility of carrying out active sport with relatively little effort. Besides the performance related point of view, hand cycling offers good pre-conditions for wheel chair sport as a preventative measure. As shown in this study, the energy turnover can be sufficiently increased by hand cycling in moderate training intensities while enabling the wheelchair users to acquire preventive health effects. However, future cross-sectional research is required regarding the relationship between regularity of body activity and mortality and morbidity.
