Infektionen mit EHV-1 und EHV-4 zählen zu den wichtigsten viralen Pferdekrankheiten. Während EHV-1 regelmäßig systemische Infektionen verursacht und neben meist milden respiratorischen Erkrankungen auch häufiger zu Aborten trächtiger Tiere und zur herpesviralen Enzephalomyelopathie führt, bleibt EHV-4 in der Regel auf den Respirationstrakt beschränkt. Der Nachweis gelingt im Nasensekret mittels Virusanzucht oder Nachweis der viralen DNA durch PCR-Verfahren. Zur serologischen Diagnose wird zumeist der Serumneutralisationstest eingesetzt, der jedoch keine Differenzierung von EHV-1- und EHV-4-Infektion erlaubt. Ein Serumpaar ist geeignet, eine kürzlich stattgehabte Infektion zu diagnostizieren.
