In this issue of Seminars we address a very important consequence of ovulation induction, namely ovarian hyperstimulation. The issue covers the pathophysiology and potential treatments to reduce the risk and potentially eliminate the disorder. Dr. Rosenwaks (an editorial board member of Seminars in Reproductive Medicine) and Dr. Benadiva have recruited several outstanding experts in the field. This issue is up to date and will serve as one of the best references on ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) in the literature.

Zev Rosenwaks, M.D., is the director and physician in chief of The Ronald O. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College and the New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is professor of obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive medicine and attending obstetrician-gynecologist at New York/Weill-Cornell. In 1994, Dr. Rosenwaks was named the Revlon Distinguished Professor of Reproductive Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Since 2000, he has been the codirector of the Institute for Reproductive Medicine.

Dr. Rosenwaks is internationally renowned for his pioneering work in assisted reproduction. He was the director of the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine in Norfolk, Virginia, the unit that achieved the first in vitro fertilization (IVF) pregnancy in the United States. He also developed the first egg donation program in America. Dr. Rosenwaks has been listed in New York Magazine's “Best Doctors in New York, the Northeast” as well as in Castle Connolly's guide, America's Top Doctors. He has also been featured in interviews on many major media outlets and newspapers.

Dr. Rosenwaks currently serves as an overseer on the Weill Cornell Medical College Board of Overseers and sits on both the Faculty Steering Council and the Executive Faculty Council and was recently appointed to serve as a committee member for the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Medicine. He has trained more than 60 fellows and was recently awarded the Weill Cornell Medical College Award for Teaching Excellence.

Dr. Rosenwaks is board certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and was past president of the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology. Currently, he serves as treasurer for the New York Obstetrical Society.

Dr. Rosenwaks has published more than 325 peer-reviewed articles, a hundred invited book chapters, and six textbooks. He is the editor of the textbook Reproductive Endocrinology, Surgery and Technology (Lippincott-Raven, 1996) and coauthor of Reproductive Medicine Secrets (Hanley and Belfus, 2004). He has been associate editor of the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics and Seminars in Reproductive Medicine.

Dr. Claudio Benadiva is the director of the IVF Laboratory at the Center for Advanced Reproductive Services at the University of Connecticut. In addition to being a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Connecticut, he is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

Dr. Benadiva is among the very few physicians who are certified by the American Board of Bioanalysis as a high-complexity laboratory director, making him uniquely suited to integrate both clinical and laboratory protocols in an IVF program. He has been awarded “Best Doctor in America” every year since 2001. In 2004, Dr. Benadiva received the prestigious “Family Building Award” from the American Fertility Association and was selected by the Consumers' Research Council in America to be included in their 2004–05 and 2008–09 editions of the Guide to America's Top Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He has been awarded “Top Docs for Women” by Connecticut Magazine and “Greater Hartford's Top Docs” by Hartford Magazine every year since 2004.

Dr. Benadiva graduated from the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine in 1981 and completed his residency in obstetrics/gynecology at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He completed a fellowship in reproductive biology and endocrinology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and a clinical fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, under the direction of Dr. Zev Rosenwaks. Currently, Dr. Benadiva serves as president of the Greater Hartford Ob/Gyn Society, and he is a member of the University of Connecticut institutional review board.

Dr. Benadiva has done extensive research in reproductive biology and endocrinology since 1986. His work has resulted in more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and 100 abstract presentations and invited book chapters. He serves as ad hoc reviewer for the journals Fertility and Sterility and Human Reproduction and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of the Latin-American Association of Reproductive Medicine.

He has lectured nationally and internationally, with a special interest in ovulation induction for IVF, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, and methods for the prevention of OHSS.
