Einleitung

Zur Geschichte der operativen Medizin und ihrer Disziplinen gibt es zahllose Literaturquellen. Sie sind meist von historisch interessierten Medizinern verfasst. Überwiegend finden wir dort – manchmal in tabellarischer Form – eine Darstellung der Entwicklungsstufen und Fortschritte, geschmückt mit unterhaltsamen Anek­doten. Historiker aber sehen in der Erforschung der Geschichte der Medizin mehr als eine Historiografie. Roy Porter, ein leider früh verstorbener populärer britischer Medizinhistoriker, definierte die Geschichte der Medizin als „historical interaction of people, disease and health­care, set in context of societies and their beliefs.“ [1]. Dies ist zwar ein hoher Anspruch, ich möchte aber dennoch versuchen, ihm gerecht zu werden, denn wie wäre es sonst zu verstehen, warum sich die Gefäßchirurgie – insbesondere die ­experimentelle – um die Wende zum 20. Jahrhundert rasant und bis zu einem erstaunlich hohen Niveau entwickeln konnte, dann aber für fast vierzig Jahre in einen Dämmerschlaf verfiel.
