Mittlerweile belegen eine ganze Reihe methodisch gut kontrollierter Interventionsstudien den Nutzen und die Effektivität einer nachhaltigen Lebensstiländerung bei Menschen mit Übergewicht. Eine moderate Gewichts-abnahme mithilfe einer gesteigerten körperlichen Aktivität und einer verminderten Kalorienzufuhr kann dazu beitragen, das Risiko für den Ausbruch eines Typ-2-Diabetes zu vermindern. Gleichzeitig kann damit auch der Verlauf eines bestehenden Typ-2-Diabetes günstig beeinflusst werden.

The effects of a long term lifestyle change for persons with a higher risk as well as for people with diagnosed type 2 diabetes are proven by numerous clinical intervention trials. Even 10 years later the risk reduction can be verified although the person has gained weight again.
